Things to know about the new album: First off, the title is The Art Of Dreaming.
I recorded all the tracks here in my home studio. All the sounds and textures were created on guitars and basses. The majority of the guitar parts are played on my main gigging guitar, my Furch Red Deluxe. I also used my Furch Orange Deluxe for most of the strumming parts and I still use my Breelove Northwest occasionally so I can get a variety of acoustic guitar textures. When you hear parts that sound like orchestration, they are often played on my various electric guitars; Fender Stratocaster, Telecaster, Gretsch hollowbody, and sometimes my Guild acoustic going through a volume pedal, creating a swelling effect. One distinctive element of this recording that separates it from my other Looper albums is that I play bass on every track but one. I wanted to get a fuller, more orchestral ambience this time around and I’ll say that I’m quite pleased with the sound.
As of this post, I now have CDs for sale at my gigs. I’m also mailing CDs with a fee for postage to anyone that can’t make it to the Monterey area. Use the contact link to reach me if you’d like to buy a copy.

Here at last is a pic of the back cover of my upcoming vinyl record release, The Art Of Dreaming. I’m saving the front cover art reveal for a later date, but here you can see the song titles and catch a vibe from the artwork. The majority of tunes are songs people have asked me to record and I’ve also included a few of my own compositions. As yet, I do not have a solid release date other than December. I will however also be releasing it on CD and major streaming services. It’s likely that will happen in late November. Once I have the vinyl version in hand, you can pick up a copy at one of my gigs.

In the past week I’ve uploaded final mixes to Disc Makers, received back mastered versions, and after some back and forth, okayed the masters. When a recording is MASTERED, it involves compression and EQ, all done in an acoustically designed room by a specially skilled recording engineer with the goal of making a recording sound good wherever it is played; in a car, on a home stereo, on a phone etc. Once mastered, they send it back to the artist for his/her review. That means relistening to every track entirely to be sure nothing fundamental has changed in the process.
The next step is submitting the artwork, (cover art by Anthony Zoccali, cover design by Jackson and John Sherry). This is for VINYL AND CD, which involves some variation. Finally the album is in the production stage. There are still a couple of loose ends as I have to review the final artwork before they start the CD production.
This submission and review process adds a few days to the job; submit one day, receive and review another day, approve and or amend, yet another day. I’m hoping soon to give a relatively solid date as to when I will have ALBUMs and CDs in hand and for sale.
It may happen before Christmas or maybe not till after the New Year. It’s nice having four regular gigs a week where you’ll be able to pick up a copy. Stay tuned!

The week ahead brings us much closer to the start of physical production of the new album. One final day of mixing on Monday, fingers crossed. Jesse DeCarlo has been a great partner and advisor in this process, as great recording engineers should be. I initially have recorded all the tracks in my home studio and then done a preliminary mix. I then load the project onto a thumb drive and we get together at Jesse’s studio and the real mixing begins. He not only has superior equipment and expertise but I value his sensibilities to assess any wacky sonic ideas I may have and to let me know if they will really work or not.

On Thursday, I should receive the final artwork images from my friend Anthony Zoccali. Anthony’s a great photographer and has come up with some great enhancements from pics from our last photo shoot.

So with the final mixes and the artwork in hand, I can then start the manufacturing process. After Disc Makers receive all of the above, the next step will be Mastering the tracks.

This week I’ve been working with Jesse DeCarlo, one of Monterey’s finest recording engineers. Together we are mixing and remixing the tracks for my upcoming album. All of the recording is complete and now we’re going through the process of making sure every instrument sounds great and is balanced within the ensemble. This is a real team effort and I’m so happy to be collaborating with Jesse on this part of the creative process. More updates are coming as we get closer to the final product.

“Dear John Sherry I don’t leave comments on Youtube, but I just wanted to thank you so much for making a full version of the Mentalist song. I checked every year, and even wrote to the show (of course nobody answered :)). This is one of the better surprises this year. Thank you again! Best wishes from Switzerland”

While most of the cues that I wrote for The Mentalist, were pretty much buried under the action and dialogue, there was one piece I wrote that was featured because it was a clue; so for a brief few seconds in that episode my little country/rock piece was the only thing heard. As it turns out, someone created a YouTube video of the scene with the title, What’s The Name Of This Song? And someone found me on Facebook to let me know about it.

The episode, btw, is “Cherry Picked” Season 05, Episode 06.

The “song” I wrote was just a cue, 22 seconds in length of which they used about 11…But, on receiving that kind of enthusiastic response from a few thousand people, I resolved to create a full length (2:38) version. I added some mandolin, a banjo part that I performed on a ukulele and borrowed a friend’s Telecaster so my Chickin’ Pickin’ would ring like a bell. Once I’d recorded all the tracks I called my friend (top notch recording engineer and owner of said Telecaster) Jesse DeCarlo and we mixed it together.
